Report highlights importance of policy stability for Canadian potash's role in global food supply

A recent Canada West Foundation report argues decisions made about potash today could shape Canada’s food security, economic strength and geopolitical position for decades.

The report, The Food Mineral: What is potash, why does it matter and how can Canada maximize its benefits?, examines why potash is critical to food security, economic prosperity, and Canada’s strategic position in a changing global environment.

A critical input for agriculture

Potash is a potassium-rich mineral and one of the three primary nutrients required for fertilizer, alongside phosphate and nitrogen. Potassium supports water retention, enzyme activity, and overall plant health, helping crops withstand stress and maximize productivity, making potash essential to modern agriculture.

The report states that without potash, maintaining a competitive agricultural sector is nearly impossible. Global food demand continues to increase as arable land declines and climate-related stress intensifies. The report notes that about 20 per cent of global agricultural soils are potassium deficient, especially in South-Eastern Asia and South American countries.

Canada’s global advantage

Canada holds the world’s largest known potash reserves, nearly all of them located in Saskatchewan. The province accounts for roughly one-third of global production. With potash supply concentrated among only a few producers, Canada’s capacity to deliver long-term, stable supply gives it a strategic advantage in global food systems.

The report notes that access to Canadian potash strengthens relationships with allies and positions Canada as a reliable partner at a time when food security and geopolitical stability are increasingly intertwined.

Economic value and policy risk

Potash is an essential component of Saskatchewan’s economy. The industry supports thousands of jobs and generates significant public revenue.

The report warns that even engaging in tax reform can create uncertainty. The authors emphasize the importance of policy stability to support long-term investment.

Key opportunities identified

The report proposes that governments should focus on opportunities to strengthen competitiveness by:

  • Improving supply chains
  • Supporting talent attraction and retention
  • Continuing trade diversification

Why it matters

Potash may receive less attention than other critical minerals, but its importance is no less significant. The report concludes that potash helps feed the world and anchors one of Canada’s most important long-term strategic advantages.
