Report highlights importance of policy stability for Canadian potash's role in global food supply

A critical input for agriculture

Potash is a potassium-rich mineral and one of the three primary nutrients required for fertilizer, alongside phosphate and nitrogen. Potassium supports water retention, enzyme activity, and overall plant health, helping crops withstand stress and maximize productivity, making potash essential to modern agriculture.

The report states that without potash, maintaining a competitive agricultural sector is nearly impossible. Global food demand continues to increase as arable land declines and climate-related stress intensifies. The report notes that about 20 per cent of global agricultural soils are potassium deficient, especially in South-Eastern Asia and South American countries.

Canada’s global advantage

Canada holds the world’s largest known potash reserves, nearly all of them located in Saskatchewan. The province accounts for roughly one-third of global production. With potash supply concentrated among only a few producers, Canada’s capacity to deliver long-term, stable supply gives it a strategic advantage in global food systems.

The report notes that access to Canadian potash strengthens relationships with allies and positions Canada as a reliable partner at a time when food security and geopolitical stability are increasingly intertwined.
